Tafelberg and Sanlam once again invite writers, established or beginners, to enter the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature. This time around the organisers are looking for stories in which humour plays a role in manuscripts suitable for young adult readers.
Think you might have something suitable? Need to know what 12- to 18-year-olds are reading? Want to know what the judges are looking for? Take some tips from the previous prizewinners: Sharkey’s Son by Gillian D’achada, Dance of the Freaky Green Gold by John Coetzee, Lien se lankstaanskoene by Derick Van der Walt, Onderwêreld by Fanie Viljoen, Nne na Inwe by Tsireledzo Mushoma, and Monona wa Bosupa by Kabelo Duncan Kgatea.
Entries may be in Afrikaans, English, the Nguni and Sotho languages, Tshivenda or Xitsonga. The competition closes on 30 June 2009. Winning novels will be published by NB Publishers under the Tafelberg imprint in 2010. For enquiries contact Danita van Romburgh at dvanromb@nb.co.za or (021) 406 3412.

History of the Prize:
In 1984, Sanlam in cooperation with Tafelberg Publishers created the Sanlam Prize. Gold, silver, and bronze awards were given to authors of English and Afrikaans children’s books. The competition is now open to all eleven official South African languages with six equal prizes.
