Dave Pepler has loved plants since his grandfather used to push him along in a wheelbarrow on his walks into the veld. Thus it comes as no surprise when Pepler describes his book Forever Green / Immergroen as being about longing. A hankering after things which we have lost – like childhood adventures and time with our grandfathers, or mislaid like a closer connection with nature that surrounds us.
Forever Green is filled with Dave’s stories about plants and the connection between them and ourselves. His beautiful prose is complemented by Lien Botha’s stunning photography and Laurian Browns’ plant knowledge. Where better than to hold a talk about such a work of art than at the elegant Mount Nelson in Cape Town?
Pepler took guests on an entertaining walk through the hotel’s stunning garden, regaling them with anecdotes about this plant and that person, whereafter everyone got stuck into high tea with cakes and tarts and little nibbles, all the while surrounded by luscious green, green, green.
