A Farm in My Heart is, according to co-author François Smuts, a celebration of the everyday holiness of life. His wife (and co-author) Emilia le Roux grew up on a beautiful farm, Doornskraal, near De Rust. From her parents she learned how to plant and manage a vegetable garden, to bake bread and breed with livestock. It was an idyllic life - one that she and François wanted to recreate in some measure in the city.
Out of this desire came A Farm in My Heart - the book is a practical guide to living if you like - you’ll find tips on a multitude of things; from soil preparation to growing a vegetable garden to food recipes and more. François has a particular affinity for Emilia’s pickled olive recipe (apparently the olives go down especially well with a martini). What better place to launch such a book than at Langverwagt Farm? Guests arrived via a tree-lined path, the sweet smell of roses, gardenia and lilies scenting the evening air, gathering around a koi-filled pond. The farm itself represents a simpler way of living and the tranquility that comes with it and so, it was here that friends and family gathered with guests to reminisce about days gone by, but also to learn how to take what was good and build on it in the present.
A Farm in My Heart is also available in Afrikaans as Waar vye nog soet is.
