South Africa is possibly divided even more along linguistic lines than along racial lines.
This has been John Linnegar’s conclusion after creating a course for language practitioners at Parliament and compiling a guide to English usage in South Africa, the charmingly-titled Engleish Our Engleish: Common errors in South African English and how to resolve them.
“We were not taught from a young age to speak each other’s languages,” Linnegar said at the launch of the book at the Book Lounge this week. English is possibly our lingua franca, but is often used incorrectly and inconsistently by second-language English speakers.
Linnegar believes the divide can be bridged with a handful of helpful, SA-specific tips on English grammar, spelling and punctuation – tips that his book lays out in a clear and lively fashion. It highlights common mistakes made by second-language English speakers here (and indeed many first-language English speakers!) and shows how they may be corrected.
Counterbalancing this is Linnegar’s very strong wish not to become a “linguistic imperialist”. He said: “It is a two-way street. Whoever teaches English to Africans must understand the grammar behind their first languages.”
Mbuyisazwe Hector Tshabalala, editor-in-chief of the Language Services Section of Parliament, agreed that it is easier to assist second-language English speakers if you understand where they are coming from.
It is not that they are “ignorant or uncouth”, he said. There are reasons for their struggles with English. “Most of us were taught English by someone who does not speak it as a first language in the first place – and our home languages also influence the way we use English.”
Tshabalala pointed out that English is a very difficult language to learn, to murmurs of appreciation in the audience. While African languages and Afrikaans are largely phonetic, second-language English speakers struggle with words that are pronounced differently from the way that they are spelled. “You try to increase your vocabulary by reading, but sometimes you have never heard these words pronounced. I knew exactly what a meringue was, but I called it a ‘meringway’!”
Tshabalala also called for tolerance. “People try very hard to learn English, while most of us don’t even speak a few words of their languages.”
Tshabalala said that he, like Linnegar, also had a line to draw: in this case, at the incorrect use of English by SABC broadcasters. “These people have to be role models for English usage, because that is how my children are going to learn the language.”
According to Linnegar, South African English might sound completely different in five years, because of the influence of African languages. He thinks we should let this natural evolution take place. However, he feels the written language should maintain a stricter standard – the standard set in Engleish our Engleish.

Tafelberg and Boekehuis invite you to pluck a story from the Boekehuis garden this Saturday, at the Johannesburg launch of Linda Rode and Fiona Moodie’s In the Never-Ever Wood / In die Nimmer-Immer-Bos.
Here, in In the Never-Ever Wood are sixty stories, selected and retold by fairy-tale lover and compiler of children’s books Linda Rode.
Smaller folks, who have the stories read to them, as well as self-readers, will derive an equal amount of pleasure from this book. It is a comprehensive collection that will open up the wide, wide world of fairy tales and other folklore to children.
A sure winner for Christmas!
