Excerpt with Recipes and Photographs from Nataniël’s Gatherings

December 8th, 2009 by Ronel S

The Table SettingThe StarterThe Cocktail

GatheringsPerformer, author, singer and fundi when it comes to all things tasty and beautiful, Nataniël is set to wow fans with his latest book, Gatherings: A Year of Invitations. This is far more than a coffee table book – although it’s stylish enough to be one. It’s got stunning photography, amazing recipes and is full of anecdotes from the writer. We bring you a preview as published in Showcook:

My best childhood memories are those of Christmas celebrations at my grandmother’s house. The entire family would get together in Wellington, and there were many of us! There was always a huge tree with tin angels and tiny candles, an overwhelming amount of food and a concert in the sitting room. That is where everything started for me, my love of special occasions, my weight problems and my need to be on stage.

Celebrating Everyday Holiness at the Launch of A Farm in My Heart

November 27th, 2009 by Ronel S

Introducing Their Book

A Farm In My HeartWaar vye nog soet isA Farm in My Heart is, according to co-author François Smuts, a celebration of the everyday holiness of life. His wife (and co-author) Emilia le Roux grew up on a beautiful farm, Doornskraal, near De Rust. From her parents she learned how to plant and manage a vegetable garden, to bake bread and breed with livestock. It was an idyllic life – one that she and François wanted to recreate in some measure in the city.

Out of this desire came A Farm in My Heart – the book is a practical guide to living if you like – you’ll find tips on a multitude of things; from soil preparation to growing a vegetable garden to food recipes and more. François has a particular affinity for Emilia’s pickled olive recipe (apparently the olives go down especially well with a martini). What better place to launch such a book than at Langverwagt Farm? Guests arrived via a tree-lined path, the sweet smell of roses, gardenia and lilies scenting the evening air, gathering around a koi-filled pond. The farm itself represents a simpler way of living and the tranquility that comes with it and so, it was here that friends and family gathered with guests to reminisce about days gone by, but also to learn how to take what was good and build on it in the present.

A Farm in My Heart is also available in Afrikaans as Waar vye nog soet is.

New: A Farm in My Heart / Waar vye nog soet is

November 12th, 2009 by Ronel S

A Farm In My HeartWaar vye nog soet isDoornkraal is a farm near De Rust where Swepie and Anne le Roux have farmed for decades. This is where they taught their children – all seven of them – to live off the bounty of the land.

Everything served at Doornkraal’s table comes from the farm. The smoked sunflower seeds, the butter, the ricotta… The fish would have been pulled from the farm dam earlier in the day; the quince sweets might still have been fruit hanging ripe and heavy on the tree but a few hours ago; and the cream would have made the heart of the separator go klink-klink-klink only that morning.

Emilia le Roux is one of the seven children who grew up on Doornkraal. She and her husband, Francois Smuts, wrote A Farm In My Heart: From the yard to the pantry and the table for everyone who yearns for the land, and who wants to bake and cook for the ones they love in a real farm kitchen.

This is not simply a cookbook, it’s also a down-to-earth, do-it-yourself guide to preparing your soil, making compost, planting, nurturing and harvesting. It will inspire you to reacquaint yourself with your own piece of land, and to live a simple and soul-filled life.

Sour Grapes! Neil Pendock on the Closing of The Weekender

November 9th, 2009 by Ronel S

Sour GrapesWine writer Neil Pendock, author of Sour Grapes, found reason to expand on the theme of his book’s title following the announcement of the closing of The Weekender newspaper. That’s another wine column lost, he writes:

The bombshell that this is the last weekend of the Weekender evoked the usual progression of emotions running the gamut from D to D: dismay, disgust, despair. From the B-(Bacchanalian) perspective, it’s yet another nail in the coffin of wine hackery with the loss of yet another wine column although agile Michael Fridjhon has a fallback slot on Business Day. But the loss of Penny Haw’s wine features (worth the cover price alone) is a tragedy, as no other organ covers her angles.

A Gathering of Great Fun for the Launch of Nataniël’s New Cookbook

October 30th, 2009 by Ronel S

Nataniël

GatheringsFabulously fun and enjoyably entertaining! The launch of Nataniël’s new cookbook, Gatherings, was everything you wished it would be at Exclusive Books Clearwater Mall earlier this week.

The launch featured a festive, petal-bedecked table of this gorgeous new cookbook and a buzzing air of expectation as the guests awaited Nataniël’s arrival.

He was introduced by Marga Collings from NB Publishers as a “national treasure” and “style icon”. Speaking in both English and Afrikaans, Collings described Nataniël as “besonder veelsydig” – a “successful singer, writer, lyric writer, composer, artist, stage personality, playwright, chef and businessman”. She praised him for fitting all this in to his life and yet finding, “time to enjoy gatherings with friends and colleagues, making each one a beautiful occasion in which he combines his favourite things – cooking, eating and friendship”.

She said Gatherings is about “Memorable celebrations and magical get-togethers at Nataniël’s house and garden over the course of a year”.

Bouncing forward, Nataniël had guests laughing within seconds with his opening comments, which included “It’s very strange to do a speech about good cooking within walking distance from the Spur!”. Saying he was born in “the wrong country at the wrong time”, although he has tried rugby, politics and sport, he has come to realise that he “only likes food” and is “obsessed about the culture of eating”.

Describing how he spends time reading books on the history of food “while other people breed”, he took guests through the human journey of discovering a knife and fork. Painting a picture of how we have moved from communal eating out of shared bowls to set places for individuals he said, “the modern way of eating changed everything”.

He joked that eating, and the culture thereof, had changed quite a lot down the generations: “in the 21st century I can have a weight problem!”. He spoke of the pleasurable joys of eating at home. “Before the crime will kill us all, my message is to stay at home and eat!”.

He delighted guests by sharing how his mother was never a good cook – “she will just kill you with her cooking” – but how life was “cholesterol heaven” with his grandmother. She believed “Tomorrow the war will start so let’s eat everything today!”. He told how they ate with open doors at her house. “The entire town was welcome”.

Talking about Gatherings specifically, Nataniël mentioned that it is not a book about how one should cook but about how he ate for a year. He included all the special events in his year – except for a funeral. He tried to inspire people with simple food: “If you can’t cook, dim the lights and drink more!”.

Gatherings is about how you present the food and who joins you at your table, it’s about using “your best every day” and enjoying “your stuff!”

And his final gem of the evening: “Who the hell wants to watch TV if you can eat?”
