A Farm in My Heart is, according to co-author François Smuts, a celebration of the everyday holiness of life. His wife (and co-author) Emilia le Roux grew up on a beautiful farm, Doornskraal, near De Rust. From her parents she learned how to plant and manage a vegetable garden, to bake bread and breed with livestock. It was an idyllic life – one that she and François wanted to recreate in some measure in the city.
Out of this desire came A Farm in My Heart – the book is a practical guide to living if you like – you’ll find tips on a multitude of things; from soil preparation to growing a vegetable garden to food recipes and more. François has a particular affinity for Emilia’s pickled olive recipe (apparently the olives go down especially well with a martini). What better place to launch such a book than at Langverwagt Farm? Guests arrived via a tree-lined path, the sweet smell of roses, gardenia and lilies scenting the evening air, gathering around a koi-filled pond. The farm itself represents a simpler way of living and the tranquility that comes with it and so, it was here that friends and family gathered with guests to reminisce about days gone by, but also to learn how to take what was good and build on it in the present.
A Farm in My Heart is also available in Afrikaans as Waar vye nog soet is.

Waar vye nog soet is

Doornkraal is a farm near De Rust where Swepie and Anne le Roux have farmed for decades. This is where they taught their children – all seven of them – to live off the bounty of the land.
Everything served at Doornkraal’s table comes from the farm. The smoked sunflower seeds, the butter, the ricotta… The fish would have been pulled from the farm dam earlier in the day; the quince sweets might still have been fruit hanging ripe and heavy on the tree but a few hours ago; and the cream would have made the heart of the separator go klink-klink-klink only that morning.
Emilia le Roux is one of the seven children who grew up on Doornkraal. She and her husband, Francois Smuts, wrote A Farm In My Heart: From the yard to the pantry and the table for everyone who yearns for the land, and who wants to bake and cook for the ones they love in a real farm kitchen.
This is not simply a cookbook, it’s also a down-to-earth, do-it-yourself guide to preparing your soil, making compost, planting, nurturing and harvesting. It will inspire you to reacquaint yourself with your own piece of land, and to live a simple and soul-filled life.

Nataniël considers a day off or a night at home a blessing, an event, that has to be celebrated by doing three of his favourite things: cooking, eating and seeing his friends.
His new, extraordinarily beautiful cookbook memorably portrays gatherings, celebrations and magical get-togethers at his house and sylvan garden over the course of a year. The events include a Valentine’s dinner, a Hocus Pocus Party, Christmas and Easter Celebrations and impromptu meals with friends and colleagues.
Gatherings is intended as both an inspiration and a tribute to home cooking and entertaining – practical, affordable, elegant, spontaneous, grand, relaxed, formal, informal, fun, opulent or intimate.
About the author
Nataniël was born in Grahamstown on August 30, 1962. He attended Riebeeck-Kasteel Primary School and De Kuilen High in Kuilsrivier. After school he studied music at the University of Stellenbosch. He initially rose to fame as a cabaret star and stage performer but since the 1990s he is also well-known as a writer and food fundi. His publications include Dancing with John (1992), Rubber (1996), Tuesday (2001), Food from the White House (2002), Kaalkop (2004) and When I Was (2008). He has been writing the column ‘Kaalkop’ for Sarie for quite a number of years.

The GI Diet

Hilda Lategan’s revised and updated cookbook for diabetics finds favour in the Business Day:
DIET is die with a t,” said everyone’s favourite fat cat, Garfield. This would be at some point during his long battle with the paunch, and assorted other fat bits, since his creation many moons ago.
I have to agree. The whole concept of dieting is horrid. The thought of tasteless rice crackers to satisfy those mid-afternoon sugar pangs fills me with horror. As does the idea of cutting out some parts of my normal meals for a few weeks for the sake of losing a few kilos.
But then I wouldn’t even have to consider cutting out chocolates and cakes and fizzy drinks if I had not decided that two chocolates a day was what I needed while pregnant.
I packed on the kilograms, 28 of them to be precise, and here I am still 5kg away from where I want to be, post the birth of my daughter. So thoughts of gym and a change in diet have entered my head.
But the thought of flavourless carrots every day until I die — because now it’s all about a change in lifestyle and not a two-week wonder — is enough to put me off healthy eating.
So it was with some relief that I came across the South African Cookbook for Diabetes and Insulin Resistance 1. No, I’m not diabetic, and I don’t have insulin resistance either. But I do have family that should be more careful about what they take in by mouth, as they are on the cusp, so to speak, of a life- changing diagnosis.
Diabetes is making the headlines more and more often these days. And it does involve a lifestyle change, to eating much healthier, and if you have type 1 diabetes, insulin becomes an important part of your life.
